Default johnson 35 loses speed when you increase the throttle

hi, I am trying to figure out why my johnson loses speed when you increase the throttle. if you have it in gear and low revs the propellor turns and the boat moves, as you increase the revs the engine noise increases but the boat almost grinds to a stand still. Its almost like the clutch is slipping, but not the answer as there is obviuosly no clutch. HELP HELP HELP.

Ah, but there is a clutch!!! It is a rubber shock hub built into the propeller. Yeah, I know, you can't see it, but it's in there.

If you want to find out if it's slipping do this: Make a mark on the prop nut, and another mark on the propeller, aligned with the first one. Run the motor till you experience the suspected slipping, stop the motor and check the marks. If they are no longer aligned, the hub slipped. If they are still aligned, repeat the test, there is a slim chance it stopped slipping in the same spot.

Replace or re-hub the propeller and go again.

spun prop, there basicly is a damage control clutch built into the prop, it is a rubber bushing between the inner and outer hub of the prop, to prevent damage to the lower unit. 99% change this bushing is slipping, when put under load. you need to have the prop rebuilt, or a new prop. you can check it by using a permanent marker, and drawing a line across the rear side of the prop outside to outside across the nut and hub, run it , and if it is spun the mark will not be lined up.
