Johnson 1965 6HP spark plug size

When I bought the motor it was running two j6c plugs and they both died. I bought two new ones and put them in and they worked but took around 50 pulls to start. I saw somewhere that it ran a j4c plug. Could that be the problem why it takes so long to start? Does anyone know the right size?

you are correct on the plug J4C gapped a .030. if your having shuch a hard time starting have you check if yu have good spark. i don't think the plugs would do that, Has the carb ever been soaked and rebuilt, with a rebuild kit and new float? i'm assuming you have a remote tank. starting should be. open vent if it has one, pump bulb till hard, pull out choke, pull three times , if it doesnt start, re pump bulb, and pull some more. they should start cold with 4 or 5 pulls. you have to have 3 things for it to run, compression, proper spark, andproper fuel/oil delivery. if you have 2 the 3rd is the problem.
