Has any one installed a electric starter on an 18 HP , 1964 Johnson pull start , is it possible . the manuals & brochures show a starter electric starter as a part available :
You'll pretty much have to find an electric start donor engine to get this done, I'm afraid. Try places like www.tcoutboard.com and other places that specialize in used parts.
The electric start option wasn't all that popular for that engine, so there won't be a lot of them around, either. Expect to pay a pretty penny, unless you can run down an old non-running 18 hp from around that year you can get for a parts donor.
Sure...go ahead and laugh at my old aluminum boat. It's paid for!
ive got a 63' with the electric start, a nice option to have if you plan to keep the motor a while.you might want to keep watch on ebay and try the place mentioned on above post.you will need the starter and mounting bracket, ignition switch(marine type), starter solenoid (omc)and wiring. it would be possible to install an electric choke but i use the manual choke pull knob. mine didnt have it.the 18 and 20 hp johnsons and evinrudes from about 62 thru 69 that have the electric start should be a close match to what you need. other years may work but with my limited knowledge someone here, possibly (Samo-ott,the 18 hp guru)will know more specifically.the original wiring from my motor was totally rotten so I fabricated all new wiring which was not difficult at all and with some wiring knowledge you can do the same.i will check to see if i have some pics available.cheers
