Default impeller replacement for an 1998 Evinrude 115 hp

Hey Guys, could i possibly get some assistance in replaceing the impeller for my Evinrude 98 model 115 hp ? i have ordered the kit : Water Pump Repair Kit for Johnson/Evinrude 435929 5001595 - Sierra and have been reading these forums looking for information on how to do this myself, I got an Evin/Johnson service manual on a PDF file but its for 1973 - 1989 motors, i understand its a bit different to drop the lower unit for later model Evinrudes. The Reason why I've chosen to replace the impeller is no p-stream at all and decided to put an complete repair kit in for replacement . I've seen where you fellas give really good step by step information on making repairs and i fully intend to buy an OMC service manual for my model outboard, but need to figure out how to do this now with your help if you can. Thanks and Best Regards

By all means service the water pump, especially if it has been a couple years since it was last done. But also be aware that your tell tale nipple, or the water line connected to the nipple, may be clogged. Spiders and little critters love nesting in there for some reason. Take it apart and ensure it is clear.

Regarding the water pump overhaul, check out the top secret files after my name for a thread concerning this. It will guide you through it. Let us know if you have any trouble.

    ...actually here it is

Be sure to clean out the water intake area while the lu is down, and flush/backflush the cooling circuit as well to ensure it is not clogged.

My '98 Johnny has a clevis pin on the base of the powerhead, that you need to pull in order to release the shift rod. You also need to slide the shift linkage sideways to effect the release of the shift rod. That should be the only significant differences between the manual you have and the motor you have. I used aviation gasket maker, automotive silicone and marine grease as substitutes for the OMC products.

Getting that clevis pin out of the shift rod was a job, but otherwise dropping the lower unit and replacing the impeller, gaskets, housing
worked out pretty smooth -- checked the tube directly from the pump that runs to the tell tail it was clear, even the little filter just before the water shoots out the tell tail was clear. We got the motor back together, put the flusher on it and it started a nice water stream right off the bat . Now it's winter time here and was about 37 F today, the one thing i did notice after i ran the motor for a bit on the flusher the stream got really really hot, just about scalding hot and it makes me wonder if i possibly have a thermostat problem . In the summer time running a motor on a flusher, feeling the water comming out of the stream is warm, no where near the temperature this was in dead cold weather. What do you guys think could be causing this ? thanks

Possible you have a thermostat prob but the true test now is to get it the water and give it a good run.

Here is a small piece of advice..... V-4's hate muffs! I have had many strange results with V-4's and muffs and I use an oil drum cut down to fit under my motor. As was stated above the true test is in the water.

I would need to look at my service manual to see where I used the silicone, since I cannot remember. There is a couple of Orings that get glued into the roof of the water pump cover. Perhaps this was where I used it.

Remember, as stated, running on the muffs, and having water exit the tell tale, is by no means a test to verify that the water pump is working. It will shoot water out of the tell tale on the muffs even without the impeller installed, as the water pressure from the hose directs the cooling water through the circuit. Check your t stat, and ensure that your overheat sensors are functioning as they should.

I just got the t-stat on order with a new spring, O ring and the t stat cover. i figure i might as well go with all new parts and replace it so i'll know it's been done about the same time Jan 2011. This was a used motor i got from an individual that had probably sat up for quite a while. The boat mechinic i use already cleaned the carbs and replaced a needle in one of the them and said this motor had real good compression thinking its low hours on it, just not much use. High Trim, i'm guessing the waterpump/impeller's working well due to the fact when i increase the throttle with the engine running the stream gets real fast and hard. The T stat maybe clogged with something but im afraid if i pull it (its a 13 yr old part) something might crack on it and i'll have to order a new one anyway so i went with replacement of it. Parts come in next week. Once i get the new T stat and everything replaced im going to try and get a warm day to get a test run on the lake -- thanks for the input fellas

I used the silicone in place of OMC Adhesive M sealant, to glue an oring into the top of the impeller housing, under the ss liner. Ditto for the d-shaped oring under the impeller housing.
