This is my first post! I've been a long time reader of the forum. I've picked up tons of great information. I even got some owners and service manuals that were next to impossible to find anywhere else.
I've been looking for a carb kit, fuel pump rebuild kit, and a fuel filter for my 1970 johnson 9.5. I haven't found any reference to a Mallory kit but I did find a NAPA 18-7823 and a Sierra 18-7823 fuel pump kit. Will either work on this outboard? The pictures look similar, and the gaskets looks similar to what I have.
Also, I've seen several posts where folks have talked about rebuilding carbs and replacing fuel filters on outboards similar to mine so the parts must be out there somewhere. Does anyone know where I can find them?
Re: Fuel pump kit and carb kit for 1970 Johnson 9.5
The NAPA parts with 18 as the leading number are Sierra aftermarket parts. The fuel pump kit is good. There are no aftermarket 9.5HP carburetor kits; you will have to buy them from a BRP/Evinrude authorized dealer - part # 382048.
BTW, The small square pump repair is much easier with instructions, but instructions don't come with the aftermarket kit. The OEM kit is #393088.

harely, if you still have all the old parts, look at them very carefully, I noted this when i took mine apart and things got all mixed up. The gaskets and diaphram all took a set, and if you look at them very carefully you may see markings on the old ones from being squeezed, they have an imprint on them.
Beyond that i can only suggest that as you take ea part off, you very carefully set it aside in the order that it came off and in the same orientation, makes future reassembly much easier.
I know when i take things apart now that i set up the sony video cam and record the process...that way i can watch when i get confused rebuilding. I also take pics as i go now.

Sierra and NAPA (who sells the sierra parts) do have after market kits that work. I've done so many of these old carbs, I may have a few of the parts in the drawer. WHO KNOWS????
