Hi am new here How to tell if fuel pump in 1969 4hp johnson outboard model4w69b is working after pumping the blub it will start the stop arter a few sec then have to do it all over was runing ok last season help and thanks bowmanhere
Hi bowmanhere. Welcome to ibaots. There are couple of tests you can do to see if your pump is still working properly. Probably the easiest is to pump the primer bulb on your gas tank (if you have one) until it becomes firm. If it does get firm and stay that way for a minute or two that's a good sign. Another test is to start the motor and manually pump fuel to it using the primer bulb, if the motor picks up and keeps running, then you have a fuel delivery issue. Another test is to temporarily disconnect the fuel line going from the pump to the carb while the motor is running. You should see fuel being squirted out of the fuel line in a pulsating manner. I would also suggest installing an inline fuel filter like the one in the pic below between the pump and the carb. Not only will it filter the fuel, but it will allow you to see the flow of fuel coming our of the pump without having to disconnect the line in the future. Give these tests a try and let us know what you find. Sometimes they just need a good cleaning, but if the pump is shot, I don't think they make rebuild kits for it, so you'll have to get anew one, but they're only about $20 at the link below and super easy to install. Let us know what you find. Good luck!
