Default Fuel problems 1997 225 Johnson Venom

After running my outboard 1/2 to 3/4 throttle for a while and then stopping to fish, it starts up OK but hesitates in taking the gas to get going again. After trying 3 or 4 times and feathering the throttle, it will run fine. I also note that the oil in the VRO did not go down (I also left the cap loose after filling)I have 50:1 mix in the gas as this is a new outboard to me and I'm not sure about the VRO. Before I go right out and replace the expensive fuel/oil pump is there anything else I should check out.

The VRO may have been disconnected. Continue to run 50:1 until you verify this. Did you ever run it without 50:1 in the fuel tank?? Follow the wires from the tank to the motor and see if they are connected and if any others have been diconnected.

Thanks for the reply RB. No, I know the VRO was connected because the first time I took the boat out (just bought it in Dec.) the oil in the VRO went down as it should have (even though I had premixed gas). So I am pretty sure it at least was working. If I stupidly left the cap off the oil tank after filling it would the VRO work??Thanks!

If you did not pump up the oil tank primer bulb to make sure it was hard, the pump may have never primed itself enough to pump the oil. You should only have to do this once, as it remains under pressure from then on. So let me make it clear that you do NOT want to pump it every time you go out. Make sure the cap is on tight...
