Evinrude 8HP 2 Stroke RPM Measurements

How do you measure RPM's on these two stroke, 2 cylinder engines. I have an older engin analyzer I used to use on older cars where you clip a pickup lead on one of the spark plug wires. Will this work?

Yes and no.
It will work but since the 2 stroke fires on every revolution while the 4 stroke only fires on any one cylinder on alternate revolutions it will read double the correct speed.
