I've just got an Evinrude 8 hp 1984 as a gift.
The motor was not used for a couple of years, but it started after a few attempts.
The only problem is that I can't turn it off via the kill switch.
I've read a few posts concerning this topic and it seems to be quite easy to locate the
problem with a multimeter -- if you know how to do it.
But I don't. Could someone explain me how to do this? That would be great.
I don't know how tor proceed.
From the kill switch, one lead goes to the power pack, the other to ground.
Disconnect both, take your multi meter on OHM scale, one test pin to each lead.
When 'running' the circuit should be OPEN, meaning no OHM recorded of infinity.
When stop pressed in: Contact and low (0+++) reading.
If this test is passed, take the black/yellow lead FROM power pack to ground when engine is running - engine should stop! Be careful = 250Volts!!!
If engine does not stop, powerpack is faulty!!
I tested the kill switch with the multimeter and it seemed ok. The measurements were
as predicted by Haffiman. Then I wanted to proceed with the power pack
but tried to stopo the motor with the kill switch once more -- and surprisingly it worked.
Don't know why. Maybe it was just a connection issue in the switch (I
disassembled the switch yesterday)?
Do you think I can trust it now or should I search more for the cause of the failure?
I had one that the contacts inside the switch just needed a little cleaning and then it worked. Once removed you can peel the rubber off and expose the brass contacts. A little buffing with emery cloth and it was as good as new. Or you can always pull the choke lever and flood it till she quits. If you require a new button I always recommend replacing it with a lanyard kill switch. Best of luck. Rick.
