evinrude 25hp 1979 backfires with a puff of smoke from excaust

i have a 1979 evinrude 25hp it starts fine but then starts to backfire the engin sort of kicks to one side trys to stall and lets out a puff of smoke any ideas

You are having a lean condition spit-back. Check the sync & link first. Is the throttle plate closed at idle? You may have to do a carb cleaning, and install a new kit.

Sync & link means to put the throttle, and ignition linkage into agreement throuhout it's range of travel. A carb kit will have the new needle & seat, all gaskets, and core plugs, and a new float. Everything needed to put the carb back in proper condition.
