Angry Evinrude 1989 30HP 2 stroke starting issues

Having issues with this new (to me) boat, it can be a beast to start - it ranges from 4 - 40 times trying to get it started.

Here is what I have done (along with a mechanic servicing it, which helped to at least get it running):

Carb was disassembled, cleaned and reassembled.

I filled up the gas tank with 5 gallons of 93 premium and 12.8 or so ounces of Penzoil 2 stroke oil - 50:1 mix per the bottle.

I bought a brand new marine battery (starting) as the existing one was kind of weak.

Replaced spark plugs with new NGK's.

So.. where to go from here? I'm new to 2 stroke engines, but they can't be this temperamental right?

probably not the issue, but get rid if the ngk plugs.

yep, stay with the champion plugs that are spec'd for that motor. the johnnyrudes dont seem to like ngk's.

Ask the mechanic the results of compression and spark test. NGKs won't make it hard to start, they may well set off false alarms and interrupt running when noise gets bad at higher RPMs, perhaps someone else has had different experiences. Champions are the only recommended plugs for Johnyrudes. I would suspect the primer system if it is hard starting. Does it run well once it is started? You are new to two stroke engines. Yes they can be tempermental, especially starting them, if you don't know of their eccentricities

Thanks! It does run fine once started - with that in mind could it still be compression or spark plug related?

Also, are Champion QL82C the right spark plugs for this engine?

Shameless bump - hoping to get the spark plugs ordered soon, just double checking
