I have a 115hp 1980 Johnson outboard. I have been trying to find a fault in the motor. I purchased a new powerpack. before I fitted this new pack the motor turned off and on ok with the key. After I fitted the new pack the key only seemed to shut down the side of the motor that was connected to the second older powerpack. I removed and replaced the new powerpack and then the motor turned off with the key just fine.
Can I fix this by changing the wiring?
I want this powerpack as a backup but it is no use to me if I cant turn off the motor when it is fitted.
Can anyone please tell me why this powerpack would not turn off with the key?
The numbers on the new pack seem to be the correct ones for the suggested replacment.
There has never been a problem with the motor turning off before I fitted the new powerpack. This powerpack has never been used and is new out of the box. The circuit should be fine as the older powerpack works fine when reinstalled. When the new powerpack is fitted the two cylinders on the opposite side of the motor turn off with the key but the two cylinders connected to this new powerpack keep running.
The black and yellow wire are in the same place on each powerpack.
The wires on the larger plug are in the same position on old and new powerpack. The two orange wires thet go to the coil are also the same on both and correct.
The brown and brown with yellow stripe that connect to the stator are on not in the same place on the new and old powerpacks. They are reversed.
Can these wires being reversed be my problem and what would happen if i swapped them? Would changing them cause any damage?
