89 40hp johnson has no power and only runs when choked
i just got a 89 bass tracker with a 40 hp johnson it will start but wont stay running unless chocked. it sat for about 3 yrs new tanks and line a freshly rebuilt carbs. it is oil injected it used to run at about 20-23 knotts and pull a tube but now wont even break 10 it sounds like it doesn't get up in rpms when in gear but in neutral will rev all the way. could it be a lower unit prob or is it pistons? any ideas. before i tear it down.

I completly agree with JB. I just picked up an 87 Johnson 40hp that sat for 3 - 4 years. Mine had the EXACT symptoms you described. After a trip to the shop and 300 bucks later the motor runs fine. They had to clean the carbs twice to get all the junk out of them.

Not to challenge your credibility, but did you remove and clean the high speed orfice plugs? It is almost a sure bet that they are restricted with gum or varnish deposits.
If not that, are you sure the little gasket is in place on the center post in the float bowl?
Don't be revving it like that in neutral. You want to kill it?
