88 Johnson 150 Shifting "klunk" into forward

Hi all, is there an sort of adjustment to help lower my " klunk " when shifting from neutral to forward? reverse is abit "softer". My tach is off, BUT, i can say my idle is nothing i would consider higher then normal. ( just got a tach, installing this weekend to help insure rpm @ wot & idle are correct)

Could it be a shifting fork problem? or maybe is there an adjustment out of calibration?

i have the service manual for the my gt150. but it didn't say much in the remote section or gearcase section on adjusting. when i replaced the water pump, the shifting rod seemed like there was no adjustment, then again, i wonder if by turning the shift rod it could adjust this. i left the shift rod the way it was when i reassembled.


Any thoughts?

Also, at low speed, wake zone speed or trolling. my boat (19ft checkmate) it will "S" from port to starboard. with the engine centered, it will swing port 2 or 3 ft, stop drifting, then start to drift to starboard, 2-3 ft over then stop, and go back to port. repeatedly over & over. My trim tab/dial (above the prop) is set to 2. should i center it more to 1 or 0?

The service manual give a very specific height measurement for the shift rod. If you screwed it back in without setting it to the correct height, your shifting will be off. If the shift rod is close, you may be able to adjust the shift cable to compensate for the change in rod height. If you can't get it back to "normal" shifting, you will have to take the lower down and set the rod the the proper spec height-then reassemble.

if you do slow shifts, you put wear of the clutch dog. the lower unit is not a synchronize transmission. it clunks when going into to gear. you shift should be a swift deliberate movement. not a slow, lets listen to the gears mesh, all that does is wear the gear and clutch dog.

the weaving back and forth, is the nature of a v hull boat. very normal. if you can figure out how to stop it. you will be rich. every boat builder has tried to figure this out. it is different water pressure on the diggerent side of the bow.

What about $60 solid state gyros such as the piezo type ,
hooked up to a pivoting trim tab.
