Default '85 Johnson 40hp stalling at low throttle

    Hello,

I have a '85 40hp Johnson tiller that runs fine opened up 1/4 to full, anything under 1/4 the motor starts chugging after a while and if I don't pump the bulb and pump the electric choke it stalls. I live on the water but have about 150 yards of canal before I hit the open water. During that 150 yards I have to baby it along but once out on the open water it runs out fine. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Pat
