took the boat out to check things out the other day, i noticed that the water does piss out but not in a steady fast stream , it's was alittle on the interupted side ....comes out then stops for about 2 seconds and then comes out, could this be a water impeller(water pump ?). and if so what kit or # would be looking for?....sorry for all the editing.
now if i were to drop the lower unit does the lube get drained actually i just changed it.
This motor (1982, Zephyr ) has a tell tale in the rear corner of the lower cover.
You should have a continuous and strong stream from it.
Start by checking that it is not blocked, (outlet, hose and connection on the exhaust cover)
If it is not blocked then it could just be in need of a pump overhaul or there could be other blockages.
The grommet at the top of the water tube can be a PITA with these models because corrosion around it squeezes it over the top of the tube! Check for a good flow with a hose connected to the water tube while you are doing the water pump.
The OEM part number for pump kit is 389844, alternate 396644
The likes of Sierra and Mallory should be able to match it as its the same as several other models
well, first, I would check and see if there is a clog in the pisser and if that comes up clean, then check the thermostat and see if any water comes gushing out of there while you're running it. Thermostats have a tendancy of getting corroded up and stuck shut. Fortunately, this model has the thermostat on the top of the head, rather than the bottom, so they're easy to remove.

The pump consists of several parts. A housing, an inner cup, which lines the housing and in which the impeller spins a base plate and various gaskets etc.
If the cup and the base plate are not worn then its only the impeller that normally requires replacing. All the parts are in theory available individually but there is also repair kit that should contain an impeller and all the parts that might need replacing.
"Some water" coming out of the telltale is not good enough. It must be a good strong jet of water.
Even then it does not tell you, as said above, that the thermostat is OK and that the water passages in the head are not blocked.
If you have not got a good strong flow from the telltale then that must be sorted out or it will be likely to overheat.
Many times you just need an impeller and not the entire kit, all depends on how much wear there is. Vic explained it better than I, i'm not typing long replies as I have one arm right now to work with. I've always considered the impeller the pump, the repair kit is just that, a repair kit, I guess its all just different terminology.
Signature- If you have fuel and spark- Have you checked compression?
No, the first point water circulates is through that telltale. That is why the telltale starts flowing the instant the motor starts. Thermostats take time to open, they aren't instant which answers the question "how can water be coming out the telltale with the stat closed", cause it's before the stat. Telltales are to indicate the pump is pumping water , stat could be stuck closed and overheat the motor.
