Default 69 johnson 9.5, last thing to figure out! fuel pump?

How can I tell if my fuel pump is working properly. does it act as a check valve? or should i be able to blow through both sides. I just rebuilt it, but I'm not sure if it's correct. Just curious what it should act like.. Thanks.

You should be able to blow through the inlet side but not the outlet side.

+1. You should be able to blow into the inlet, suck out of the outlet and suck and blow through the pulse. You can also squeeze your primer bulb prior to start up. It should get and stay firm if the pump is working correctly. However, if it never hardens the pump may be bad. You can also test the fuel pump by manually squeezing the bulb while the motor is running. If it picks up upon squeezing, then the pump is bad, if it makes no difference then the pump is probably ok.

Ok, thanks for the help. So say I can blow through both sides. I know i have it put together per the diagram, but I can't really see where the small spring goes in the picture. There's a cap over the spring, and i'm not quite sure what side that goes on. The small spring is supposed to sit on the pump, right? 1340388342095-001.jpg. I'm not really sure what i can do to fix this. There's no damage to the pump, so i must be putting it together incorrectly. This is the diagram of how to build up my pump. do you see any discrepencies? 82351.jpg

In your second image with parts labled 1-10 the spring would go right where you already have the red circle. This would be the left side of the valve housing in that recess next to the mounting hole if you. Make sure when you put it together the spring doesnt shift or it wont function. Also while its apart using a toothpick push both the valves in that are permanently mounted to valve housing to make sure they are not sticking. If the spring is placed in the left side of housing then keep your fuel inlet on the left pointing down as in your picture. Good luck.
