'57 Johnson 18hp no reverse.

I could use some help. I had reverse until I took the lower unit apart to inspect and clean it. Not sure what I did wrong, but now it won't go into reverse. I can shift it into reverse via the shift lever, however the gears don't engage. What did I do wrong?

Look at page 8 # 39, this is what I believe an adjustment for the shift rod travel, trial and error should get you back up and running.

Also before touching this check your coupler in the shift rod window to make sure everything is lined back up properly.
