No. It has to be the same plug. There are HydroElectrics and Selectrics, and there are HydroElectrics with amplified battery ignition and HydroElectrics with CD ignition. There are significant differences that make them incompatible. That's why different colored plugs. The good news is that you can use either Johnson or Evinrude controls, as long as the plug colors match.

The switches for Hydroelectrics are different than Selectrics and not at all interchangable. With Selectrics, Forward is Green and Reverse is Blue. With Hydroelectrics, Neutral is Green and Reverse is both Green and Blue.

There might be a compatiblity issue between Hydroelectric switches only that some have neutral interlocks built into the switch and some don't. The ones with Neutral protection have two extra white wires for that in Johnson switches and Evinrude switches have two extra terminals for that.

Your motor probably has the Neutral protection so that you can't start the motor if the shifter is in gear. Mine is a year older and doesn't have that. It has a safety switch back on the motor that prevents me from starting it if the throttle is above high idle. I could use yours and ignore the neutral safety part. You couldn't use mine.

The black plug is for battery ignition. The pins aren't there for you to be able to shut it off. Neither is the key switch.

Is there a difference between a 71 and a 72. I just recently bought a boat that has a 50esl71s and the previous owner took the control box apart. I noticed that there is nothing for a key ignition and a couple of other things were broken. I traced the wires back to the engine and mine is yellow also. If someone has a 2nd one please let me know.

    Thanks,

im replying again to this discussion.. (I have the motor with yellow plug, & black control plug).. i have tested this motor on muffs, was able to start it, ran it for about 1 min. and turned it off with the key. I have not tested the shifting, thought it may have needed oil change so left it like that. All this was done a week ago for the first time. From reading the posts, seems like the yellow plug from the motor & black plug from the controller's aren't compatible.. because::
"It has a yellow plug. It's a Hydroelecric alright, with CD ignition. Black plugs are Hydroelectic with amplified battery ignition."
I guess my motor is hydro-electric with CD ignition..

So.. i would assume i can't use this particular controller with black plug??
Can I not modify it somehow!? or I have to look for one with yellow end?
