Both Brown and gray should be ground wires, but fun a resistance check on both first. They may have been changed in the past. Also, suggest that all wiring be referance in the manual for the motor, not by feel or recall as crossed wires will cost big time.

Mike... You state the color of the wires as being: "green, 2 blacks, white, red/white, brown, and gray".I don't recall the "gray" wire. My recollection are the wires: Green, 2 Black, White, Red/White, and Brown. The exception would be if your 40hp is a late model engine which has an alternator, in which case the "gray" wire would lead to the sensor lead/terminal of a tachometer.Note that it would help if we knew exactly what model & year engine you're speaking of.The terminals on the back of the ignition switch should read: "B" (or Bat), "M" (2 Ms), "S", and "A".The wires in relation to the switch terminals would be:Green (12v source) = To "B" (battery) term, extending from there to one side of the choke switch. If a generator is involved, Green also extends on from the "B" terminal to the BAT side of the ampmeter.Black = To "M" (magneto)... Second black to other "M" (magneto) term.White = To "S" (starter solenoid) term.Red/White = To other side of the choke switch (leads to or should lead to choke solenoid).Brown = To GEN terminal of the Ampmeter if generator equipped. The "A" (accessory) terminal of the ignition switch is for any component that you desire having 12 volts leading to ONLY when the ignition key is in the ON position.Now.... That "gray" wire. What's the model number of that engine?

I'n not sure if the wiring is similar with my motor (80 rude 50hp). The gray wire on mine is for the tach.
