Welcome to Iboats!If you've hit something hard enough to get a hole in the gearcase, I would replace the entire thing. There's little chance the driveshaft would still be in alignment. lower units for your 40 appear all the time on ebay, or you could get them from one of the local or online outboard junkyards:Twin City OutboardsMarine Parts Outletetc,But to answer your question, your local dealer _may_ have some gears for you but they're pretty pricey (~$300).
The hole in the gearcase came from within! Looks like the clutch dog and yoke became misaligned and broke sending shrapnel through the gear case. You are probably right though....a lower unit is in order since the pinion gear is not moveable by hand.thanks for your help.bill
