Question 2003 Johnson 150 ... prob removing screws.. missing screw

I've tried to change the lower unit oil... and can't get the screws to budge... is there a special screw driver to use for this?

also, a screw has fallen out of the panel on the front right side of the outside of the motor... there are 2 screws that hold a panel in place where the cables go into the cowling and 1 is missing... any ideas where I can get a replacement?

    thx,
    TAz

you may be able to get a screw from this site, if not try

or you might try removing one of the others and goin to your parts or hardware store.

on the lower unit......the larger headed screwdrivers with a good sized handle for a good grip work best for me, i even have a few with a shoulder below the handle for a wrench......dont forget to replace those washers whenyou change the oil

An impact driver will remove those stubborn drain screws 99.9% of the time. I've had some that required heat, but out of all I've removed, maybe only a few were that bad. You can purchase an impact driver at most auto parts houses, Sears ect.

Taz, I always use an impact driver to install the gearcase vent and drain. Obviously I need to use an impact driver to remove 'em as well.

The best tool I ever found for that was a BIG screwdriver with a bolt head on the end of the handle. I remove them with the screwdriver and a socket wrench on the end of it. Works everytime.

Realistically, i think most of us habitually put them in too tight. With the seal/gasket in there they just have to be hand tight. Check them regularily to make sure they don't get loose.

    wow impact drivers!!!!

that seems a litle too tight.......chris 1956 you must have had some leaks at some time to want to use an impact driver am i right?

maybe okee jimmy has had to remove some of the ones youve installed ,with impact drivers, with heat

As ascasd said, the best tool for the job is the 1/2" screwdriver with the head for leverage with a open end wrench. The impact driver is fine if you can find a bit that is large enough (at least 3/8").

The nylon seals will hold fine if they are replaced whenever you refill without any need for more than hand tightening.

You might also want to get the fill and vent screws that use allen wrenches - its cheaper than the screwdriver. I think they are standard on the E-Tec.
