2001 15hp johnson water pump replacemen ?

Can anyone explain to me how to disconnect the shift linkgage when I drop the foot to change water pump? 2001 15hp johnson outboard. Thanks Ant

remove screws that hold the lower unit to the ex housing...lu should drop down 1/2" or so...looking into that gap you'll see the brass connector that links the upper gear selector rod to the lower rod...remove the lower screw completely from the connector... I've found it helps to put the gear selector into reverse as this allows a little more of a gap and I also put a couple of the lu screws in slightly to prevent it from coming off abruptly...shop2.evinrude.com will have diagrams for your motor

What's your model number, there are a couple of different lower units used in that year and they come apart differently.

Don't know the model number. The person I brought the motor from painted over the tag can not read the #

Use acetone or lacquer thinner on a rag, and rub the paint off of the sticker.
If you don't have either acetone or lacquer thinner, you could borrow your lady's finger nail polish remover, and try that.
