Default 2000 Johnson 150 ocean pro fuel issue?

Put my boat in the water a few days ago. Motor started and idled with no problems. Ran it at WOT for about 10 or 15 minutes with no problem. Backed it down to idle, shut it down and started it again with no problems. Ran it back at WOT for 10 or 15 minutes, idled through an idle zone to a restaurant where I shut it down and started it again with no problem. We spent and hour in the restaurant and came back out to the boat and PROBLEM. I could not keep it idling, it seemed to be starving for fuel. I can work the throttle and eventually get it on plane and run it at WOT and it does not miss a beat, it runs great. I took it to a mechanic who said there was a vapor lock, he "fixed it" but I am still having the exact same issue. Also, this time the battery went dead, when I checked the connection at the battery the positive terminal was hot enough to blister my finger as soon as I touched it.

    Just to recap:
    1. When cold, it start fine and idles fine
    2. Will run at WOT with no problem
    3. Will start and idle fine right after running hard
    4. When it sits for an hour after running hard it will not idle but will run fine underway
    5. Fuel is fresh
    6. Fule filter is good and clean
    7. Carb bowls are clean
    8. No gas leak I can detect

PLEASE, any advice is appreciated.- Bo

Well, the mechanic is as stumped as the rest of us.

Put a timing light on the plug wires, see if it dropped spark, do this when it won't start.
    Does the tach work?

First of all check all of your battery connections to make sure they are clean corrosion free and tight. Did the battery go dead from cranking on the motor or after you have been running for a while? You might have a charging problem. The starting issue might be a timing issue not completely sure though. You say the carb bowls are clean when was the last times the carbs were completely cleaned?
