While driving down the lake yesterday at ~60 mph, the prop quit spinning. I tried starting again and the prop would only turn in low rpm's. If I gave it much throttle at all, it would "disengage". Prop would spin in reverse. Just had engine completely rebuilt a month ago and have used the boat 4 or 5 times since. Could it be a linkage problem? I noticed a whining sound coming from the outboard before this happened. Thanks for any help.
The symptoms you describe are classic "spun prop hub" but the whining sound suggests a blown lower unit. Check the lower unit fluid for any metal parts or shavings. Turn the prop by hand back and forth and see if you feel any grinding or hard spots. If none are found mark, the inner hub and the back of the prop with a scribe or a majic marker and try the boat out. After the prop stops againg refer to your marks and see if they are still in line. If not then you need the prop re-hubbed.
