1998 evinrude intruder 150hp

my 150hp evinrude intruder is a 1998 model and my check engine alarm is going off in gear at idle speed I can switch the motor off for a couple of minutes and the alarm clears and the motor runs fine any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Check Engine is a fuel restriction alarm. Make sure the fuel filters are clean, and make sure the mainstrainer under the airbox is clean.

Make sure the tank vent is clear, watch for fuel bulb collapsing flat.
Or try it on a small portable fuel tank to eliminate the onboard system.
