Default 1998 Evinrude 50 shift rod

Hello. I am working on a friends boat, trying to replace the water pump impeller. I can not figure out how to get the shift rod disconnected. I tried to drop the LU a little, but there is no connector there. I can see where it is connected up top under the carb, but the rod looks to have an offset in it. I can't see how that would fit down through the hole. I don't want to take the carbs off if I don't have to. Please help.

    Thanks.

The offset is not a problem, the hole that it goes thru is large. If you don't have the manual take a look in...

Select your model # and select the "SHIFT LINKAGE" this will bring up an illustrative parts picture.

i find it much easier to remove the bottom carb, and the starter, for novices. there is a cotter pin, on the shift lever, remove pin, and push lever toward block.

I suspected that was where it unhooked. I just was hoping not to have to take the carb off because I just put it back on last week. Oh, well. Thanks for the information.

I have a 1993 40 hp. I was able to get to the rod linkage by just taking the starter off. i was tight but I did it. Lots easyer than takin the carb off.

Well, I got it apart. I removed the bottom carb, starter, and fuel pump. What a pain.
