1996 Evinrude 9.9 4-stroke Spark Plug Gap?

My owner's manual and the factory service manual for my motor say that the correct plug is Champion RA8HC, gapped to .040" ... but all the charts I find on the internet indicate that the gap should be either .027" or .030"

Any ideas as to why the discrepancy?

go with the manuals.ive been on a couple of sites that gave recomendations that were way off!(plug sites that is).
