    Default 1994 Johnson 225 w/ 1999 powerhead--OMC bulletins?

Gentlemen,I am new to this forum and would appreciate any insights you may have to offer. A 1994 Johnson 225HP Ocean Runner powers the 24' Boston Whaler we recently purchased. According to the seller, it has a 1999 powerhead on it, as the original powerhead blew as a consequence of a VRO pump failure. This was confirmed by the surveying mechanic. The engine runs a bit rough, and the surveying mechanic indicated that there was a "bulletin" from OMC (or Bombardier, I'm not sure) which states that the carburetors have to be replaced with "high performance" carburetors. He said that rebuilding or rejetting them was insufficient. Does anyone have knowledge of such a "bulletin?" If so, how do I obtain the bulletin? The local mechanic said that he never heard of such a thing, and that the carburetors should be rebuilt or rejetted, which is significantly less expensive.Thank you for your time and consideration.Paul

I would look for a different surveying mechanic, one that was trained and had knowledge of Johnson, Evinrude engines. I would think that if you paid for a engine survey, the survey would list the bulletins that apply to the engine.1. Complete visual inspection of engine for missing, loose, bent, corroded, non conforming parts, should include all hoses and clamps.2. Compression3. Spark test, hot and cold, should jump 1/2 inch gap.4. wrist pin bearings.5. Steering and connections.6. Gear oil, for trash and water.7. Remove flywheel, check glue joint of magnets.8. Check stator screws and upper bearing housing bolts. I would remove these bolts clean the theads on the bolts and threaded holes. Reinstall with loctite red and torque to specs. If these bolts come out at 5500 rpm, ruins block and ignition system parts.9. Watertest, engine should pull rated rpms, and everything work smooth.10. Add to the list DH,JR and others I cant remember names.
Help somebody every day, if you can.

Dont switch surveyors until he can get us the part number for the "high performance" carbs. Seriously, like Clanton said, find a new guy. Thats a very good list he came up with too. I also would clean the carbs, and make sure it has Champion plugs in it, good oil, FRESH 87 octane fuel. The powerhead may have been replaced in 99 but there is no difference in the 96 and the 99.Good luck!
