Default 1993 Johnson 150 slow to start when first started

I have a 1993 johnson 150. It sat up for about 6mo. Now it won't start right up. After leting it set for a little while it will eventualy start. The plugs are wet. I installed a new set & it started right up. I let it set for a day & I tried to start it again & it won't start. The new plugs were wet again. I have new gas in it & I have run almost a whole tank thru since it sat up. After it starts it will run good & start good until it sits up over night. Any suggestions?

Hi Preston...welcome to iboats.I'll throw out some suggestions and maybe someone else will to.From your post, it sounds as if the primer solenoid may not be working. The primer takes the place of the old style choke plates. What it does is shoot gas straight into the area behind the carb (reed cage area) to get the engine going. The primer is the little black tin can looking thing with a red lever on it. The red lever is the manual prime. This is used in case the solenoid fails. The primer sets right at the top of the fuel bracket on the front of the engine. Have someone turn the key on and push in to actuate the primer (don't start the engine) and see if you can hear a click from the primer. If not, the solenoid may be bad. Turn the manual prime lever to manual. It will only turn one way. Try and start the engine. Don't forget to pump up the primer bulb firm first. If the engine starts, a problem exists with the primer solenoid. These tests will be done easier if you remove the air silencer cover. You can also pull one of the small hoses from the end of the primer head and crank the engine to see if fuel spurts out the primer head. Careful....raw gas.Let us know how ya' do.....thanks.

It seems like there have been lots of posts recently regarding primer celenoids including the one on my motor. Try it in the manual position and see what happens. Put the lever back down before the engine cranks as the motor wont run well in the manual position due to the influx of gas.

Almost seems as though fuel is seeping past the fuel pump, through the carbs and soaking(Flooding) the plugs overnight. Either that, or the float needles are partially sticking open and letting residual pressure bleed through to the cylinders. I'd rebuild/clean the carbs.

Sorry about no reply, but I have been very busy. Saturdy was the first time I had a chance to work on motor.I left the plugs out of it from the last time I started it & installed them & it started right up. Then I took it to the water to go fishing & it almost didn,t start. When it did it was flooded & I finally got it cleared out & it ran good all day. When I returned home I left the plugs in it & started it today (Monday). It started up on the first turn of the starter & is running like it is supposed to(No Flooding). The choke is working fine. May be time to give attention to Carb,s.Thanks for your suggestions. Great Forum.
