1992 40 hp johnson will run under primer.. not after

have a 1992 40 hp johnson can start it and run when i push in the primer and after it seens to run right out of gas. i seen in other posts that it could be the fuel pump or carb cleaning...... is there any way to check the fuel pump to see if it is indeed bad thanks ken

If the engine runs fairly normal while you or someone else is constantly pumping the fuel primer bulb (not the primer solenoid), suspect the fuel pump. If no change in the problem, suspect fouled carburetors.

i beleive it ran good under the constant pumping of the primer bulb i will check it again....if it is the fuel pump is it best to replace with the same fuel pump or should i replace with one where i have to premix thanks ken

That would be a matter of personal preference and what one is willing to pay for the cure.

I thought you were pumping the primer bulb and not the solenoid ??

i did with both first with bulb then solenoid... either would have worked i got into the carbs and found the top one a mess..... where is there a good place to get a carb i dont think iboats sells just the carb my motor is a 1992 40 johnson vj40telenm any help would be greatful thanks

You don't need a $150.00+ carburetor. You need a $20.00 (approx) carburetror kit, no doubt available here, NAPA, any dealership, marine stores, etc.

Agree. Give the carb's a full service. Both of them while you are in there.

the intake valve in the float bowl is pinched half shut and not allowing gas to go thru.. does that valve come in a kit or can it be fixed and a shop

It comes in the kit..... a vital part that makes the kit useless if not included. Guaranteed it's included.

ok after working all weekend i got to look more at the carbs its the main fuel jet that is messed up is that also in a rebuild kit thanks ken

Jets are not included with the kit but are readily available probably at this site, your local dealership, etc.
