I've noticed just this year, that while on plane my motor makes a new noise. It's hard to explain, but its like a metallic flutter. I am in no sense of the word a marine mechanic, but could it be a cylinder which is not firing? I've noticed I don't have the top end speed I used to have, but the rpm's seem normal...
thanks for your thoughts

I have experienced a similar sound. Kind of sounds like something rattling enough to make a little chime. Let me guess, your motor sounds flat on top end? Man you got to love these older evinrudes, i'll never own another one in my lifetime. I too have a 175, a 95 model. After mine warms up it takes a crap all over itself. Won't get on plane, wants to stall and tries to die when you idle it. Here's the kicker, you can unload it and for the first run of the day it runs perfect, then it takes a dump on you for the rest of your trip. Next year, i'm switching to merc whether i fix this lemonrude or not.
