1990 Johnson VRO...What's the straight Scoop?

I am restoring a little 15' Center Console and just bought a 1990 Johnson 40hp VRO with trim tilt. I went back and breezed through some of the previous posts (Very Rarely Oiled...) and am wondering what the pluses and minuses are with these motors? I am pretty compulsive and want to make certain I have a reliable unit...

What would you all do to make certain you could trust this baby for the "long haul". Does the oil injection unit pose problems? Has anyone eliminated the oil injection and just converted to an fuel/oil mix arrangement?

Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
