P/N for the stator assy. that fits your engine is (0763762) which supercedes the old P/N 0583779
I have a 1990 Johnson 60hp that hasn't been ran in several years. Before storage I had a probably with it not feeling like it was running at full power. While runny across a lake I hit a stump and it wouldn't shut off, and when it did, it never started. The mechanic told me the stator was bad and replaced it with one that he said would work, but wasn't the original. It never ran like it has full power since then. I took it back to the mechanic and he said everything checked out fine. So I am wondering if the wrong stator was in there, would it still run, but just not perform optimally. Sorry for the book.. Anyone have any ideas, would be helpful thanks.

if it does not have the right part, it is not going to run correctly. what else have you checked.

The Carbs were cleaned/rebuilt, spark plugs replaced and fresh gas. Besides that I haven't done anything else as far as compression test or other technical tests. I assumed the mechanic had checked them at the time of malfunction. Not for sure though.
time of malfunction is not now, these things change. check the easy things, before you assume anything, compression, spark, a carb can be cleaned and 20 minutes pick up something, like a piece of fuel line from disconnecting the fuel lines.

All of these things were done except the compression test, and the motor has never ran properly since the "stator" was put in. Also, I was wondering what the difference in the 60 and 70 hp models were? Can I make my 60 a 70 with something simple? I will do all these tests again this weekend and see what my results are, but I doubt I am going to see a change. thanks for the help. I will try anything several times if it might work. Would you recommend me taking it somewhere to get a compression test done?
no need remove all the plugs, get a screw in compression guage, with the ignition turn off so the motor does not spark, jump the starter solenoid, so the motor turns 4 revolutions, on each cylinder. on that motor i would want to see 100PSI atleast, and with in 10% of each other.
also the spark should be blue, and jump atleast 1/2 inch. i perfer to use an adjustable spark tester for this.

when I check the spark on the plug wire, is this an idicator of my stators condition? or is this just something to check? Thanks for all the help..
it is going to let you know if you even have spark to that plug. if a plug is not firing, the motor will not run properly, it could be the stator or a bad coil. that we will have to test for when we cross that road.
also, there is more than carbs different in the 60 and 70.
