Default 1990 Johnson 150hp Outboard ; Buy or Not ?

    Hello,

I am looking at buying a 1990 Johnson 150 hp outboard. Running condition unknown, no prop and no tilt and trim unit. The guy wants $700.00 for the motor, would you buy or not? The motor will turn over so I know it's not froze up and the lower unit seems to go in all gears okay from what I can tell. The motor is laying on a storage unit floor with no way of starting, believe me I have tried. The motor looks like it is in great cosmetic condition, under the hood looks brandnew. Is there something I should look for? Is this even a good outboard?

    Also,
Would a 1990 200 hp Johnson tilt & trim unit fit on this motor? Are those interchangable?

    Thanks for any help

That's alot of cash for a motor that you can't test. It's possible it's ok, but it's also possible that it's been mistreated.

The fact that it's laying on the floor isn't a great sign.

The motor turns over by hand or starter?

Compression test each cylinder..... at the very least!

Hooked a pair a jumper cables to the starter and it turned over that way. Going back today to look at it again.

    Thanks

the no tilt and trim is a big deal, that can get pricey to replace. sounds like a $400 motor if it passes a compression test. but you can buy one running with tilt and trim for $1200-1500, it would be a way better deal.

You will need a DVA adapter http://www.usatoolwarehouse.com/usat...e/ESI-640.html First test compression, Second test spark with a spark gap tester set a 7/16 gap, Third check timing, next CLEAN your carbs properly,

A crossflow V6. If you can post the model number, we can confirm the year of the engine. Don't know how many folks buy and engine which was not the year the owner stated it was.....

    Update:

Went and looked at the outboard again and I talked the guy into letting me take it to a marina. They did a compression check and 3 cylinders checked out at 60 psi and the other 3 at 80 psi............... The marina guy told me not to walk away from the deal but run AWAY FAST !!!!!

needless to say I am still looking for an outboard

Thanks to all for the help.

I sold a 1995 150 evinrude last month. but they are in craigslist every day, you may have to drive a little ways, but be patient one will come. I do still have 3- 115s and a 200 and a 75, motors are hard to sell right now, so wait on a deal.
