    Default 1989 70hp evinrude

got a slight problem with my 70hp evinrude when i shift in to gear it goes in ok but when i open the throttle it dies and you have to restart it. when you hold the key in you can here the choke solenoid clicking. if you hold in the key you can get it to go into gear and accelerate as normal. smacks of fueling to me but i cant see anything wrong with the carbs etc they seem balanced and opening together scratching my head a little bit. probably a common prob but as its my first evinrude i am struggling.

JB is correct , the carbs need cleaning and a good rebuild kit while you have them torn down.
The high speed jets are more than likely clogged with gunk from sitting for an extended period with fuel in the carbs.
These carbs are very easy to work on as well so thats a plus. Follow your repair manual and it will go off without a hitch.

sorry lads should have been more clear! carbs rebuilt and cleaned balanced etc cant be the high speed jets cos its just happening at slightly over tickover if anything it would be the low speed jets. if you hold the key in it richens the mixture enough to allow the butterflies open and start driving. local lifeboat mechanic had a look at it today and announced "ah sure they all do it at some point we have had about 20 0f em over the years and nearly all of them did it. we traced it to the electric primer system just replace them thats all" he also said that you can run a live wire to one side up to a switch and switch it on when you engage gear.

Mine never did it. The primer system has nothing to do with low speed stall. Having to choke it every time you take off is certainly not normal operation. Either your carbs are still clogged, the float level is off or the linkage/timing (Lync and Sync) is not adjusted properly....

Double check the idle mixture screws to make sure the idle is at it's highest point. This is a very slow process on this engine. You may also have the idle set too low-not enough timing.

i agree with idle set to low, should be 650- 700 in gear in the water. if not when you put it in gear, it will die, choking it ups the rpms just enough to keep it running.
