I've read several posts on here on this subject here including jtexas recent procedure on 4/02/10. I've removed all seven bolts and disconnected shift rod. Read in another post about pulling spark plugs and turning flywheel to help spline come out. Done all of that and lower unit will not drop but about 1/4". Anymore suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks
No actually to my knowledge has been in fresh water entire life, I just purchased a couple of years ago but believe the boat stayed at Toledo Bend Lake. If spline is rust in crank, any idea how to get it loose?
If you get it loose, make sure to use moly grease on the splines and replace the driveshaft 'O" ring, if your motor uses one on re-assembly. I've had some motors where I had to resort to using oak wedges driven between the mid section and LU to get the LU to drop. Be patient so you don't break anything.

Thank you all so kindly for your help, wooden wedges seemed to do the trick, came right off this morning once I got a bind with the wedges and pryed lightly with screw driver. Next problem is impeller looks fine to me, any ideas what else might cause it not to flow water?
Had it be cooling properly until recently w/o any issues or any work done recently? Tell us about the recent history.
Ok, lots of possible causes:
a) pump body or wear plate scored
b) rubber grommet folded over in pump outlet
c) water tube not in pump outlet
d) water tube kinked
e) blockage in cylinder head
f) thermostats or vernatherms not opening on temp increase
g) flow diverters swollen, in wrong or missing
