Hi guys ive got 40hp 1987 johnson that floods itself before firing.... carbs have been rebuilt,, it runs lumpy if i connect fuel line direct to carbs but running through the fuel pump it floods and stalls instantly cant see no tears in diaphragm on fuel pump also the vro has been disconnected before i accuired this motor was running fine last season..vent on tank is fine new fuel lines .....any ideas would be really appreciated
The needle/seat in the carbs is what controls the fuel flow. If it is flooding I would check and see if there is any trash stuck in the needle/seat holding it open. Check the float level while you are in there to make sure it is adjusted properly.

tried all that could it be something to do with fuel pump ?

Do the carbs leak when the motor is off? The fuel pump is not going to flood the motor if the inlet seats are properly adjusted. Daviet is spot on. I have had carb troubles, and had to adjust the float needle height a 1/32 higher than spec in order to keep my carbs from leaking. If you have not replaced the seat itself, or the needle, then this is more than likely your culprit.
actually when i prime it with the bulb i do hear a spaying sound inside the carbs but when i lift float up i cant blow throught the inlet....maybe adjustment is needed...thanks.....if i dont cure it im gonna use it as a mooring block
well guys none of the ideas worked however i decided to blank off the middle feed to the auto choke ....and it runs ..does this mean the auto choke solenoid is fubar..? ideas please
