I have a 1987 90hp Johnson outboard. It was running fine while tied to the dock to load up but when shifted into reverse it died and we haven't been able to get it to start. I have been told that there is a safety link of fuse inside the shifter housing that have have broken and this may be why it won't start. Is this a possibility and if so how do I check it?
Could be the neutral safety switch which is in the control box housing. Make sure you didn't knock the safety lanyard off the box or switch it to off if you don't have the lanyard. That is not hard to do.
