1986 Evinrude 150 no oil in lower unit Is this re-buildable?
Hello there! This is my first nice boat! took it to the lake after trading my PWC in for it. (Not a dealer) ran great very fast.. Noticed kinda noisy (Like gears grinding) when putting it in forward. Stalling a couple times. But ran awsome other than that. Got it on the trailer fine and noticed a Gear oil smell. couldnt find any visual leaks so i decided to check it out at home. Tomight i decided to pull the lower end unit oil plug today. I pulled it and found no oil running out. I pulled the upper screw (Hoping there was a vaccume holding the oil in) and Still no oil. Noticed some minor metal shavings on both screws (magnets). upon inspection i noticed a small crack with a piece sticking thru the case. I tried to remove it and the peice of metal fell off. (Im pretty sure its a hole cause it bulges out). My question to you folks is: Are the lower units repairable (Welding) or should i look for a new lower unit? Like i said i just traded the boat and i dont know much about outboard units (Previously owned jet boats) How do i find out what year the engine is? I think its the original engine the boat is a 1986 invader 18.3 inches. with an Evinrude 150.
Another Question i have
When i pulled the spark plugs today i noticed that they look nothing like a regular spark plug (Champion UL77V) what are so special about these? Is this the propper plug for the engine? Please help me! Thanks dave

There should be a small plate somewhere on the motor mount that has the model number, if you can't find it there you can look on the power head for a nickel sized welch plug that will have the model and serial number.
As to the lower it is gone for sure, even if you weld the hole who knows what happend to the inside, bearing sized and ruined races ect ect ect, it is dead.
Look on Ebay once you determine your year and you should be able to find one for a reasonable price.

The UL77V is a tipless plug, which was recommended for those crossflow powerheads 1978-1987. They should work well for you. It's always possible the case cracked due to water in the lower and it froze over the winter. You may be able to weld the case, but you will need to have a marine tech disassemble the gearcase and check out the gears and bearings. I'd be checking around for a used gearcase-probably a cheaper option. That's a pretty common engine and used parts should be readily available.
Re: 1986 Evinrude 150 no oil in lower unit Is this re-buildable?
Thanks for all of the info folks! I have since spoke with the guy who i traded the boat to and he is willing to give me another lower unit. Yey!! I guess the saying "B.O.A.T" Means Bring--On--other--Thousand! lol. anyways i pulled the lower unit and i will be taking it to him foe replacment. What oil do you folks recomend using? Also I have been using a 50 to1 oil mixture in the gas. Is that about right? I have been also been using "Quick silver" two stroke oil. (They sell it at wallmart and its supposed to be a good 2 stroke oil. (I used Klotz or Castor 927( in my skis. What lower lube should i use. I think the old lower unit had like 80w90 oil in it (Thats what it smelled like) too heavy??
In all is there anything i should replace on the lower unit while i have it out? other than the water pump? thank you all for all of your help!!! This site is the reason i tried to remove the lower unit myself!! i read all of the help threads and it worked!. Im not sure how im going to get the shifter bolt back in (Looks like pain in the but) any good ideas?? Thank you all!!! see ya Dave
