1985 Evinrude 40HP Tilt / Trim fill up

Two queries?How do I check fot the adequacy of fluid in my trim tilt resovoir / mechnism?If low, how do I fill the resovoir on my power trim tilt mechanism. I have a feeling the level is lower than it is supposed to be?The mechanism is the type with a butterfly type bracket across the leg and is lifted by two outer rams and one up the centre.

I don't know the difference from the '85 and '90.This is for '90 and later.

On mine I had to put the tongue of the trailer into a ditch to get the top fill screw (actually the bleeder screw vertical due to the tilt of the transom). Keep filling and bumping up and down until it works responsively and strongly.Ben

Bear & Ben, thanks a heap. How would one ever know this without first hand advice or experience.I will follow your suggestions and hopefully fix my problem, if in fact the low fluid is the problem.Just a quickie - What fluid should be used to fill it up?
