    Default 1983 Johnson 9.9 powerhead

I picked up this motor and was told it locked up. I pulled the reed valve plate and dicovered the inside of the titanic, everything is rusted solid. I want to get a used powerhead for it, what years will work on this motor? I know 74-76were points ignition but will the powerhead still work?

    Thanks

That is unfortunate. I'm not certain on this question. My only advice would be to try to get something close to an 83. If changing the power head completely, it should not matter if it has points ignition or not. I know there was a change to the recoil starting in 79 (I think) which will mean a different flywheel for pre 79 but again if changing the complete power head it would not matter. The closer you get to 83 the more spare parts you will have from your rusted motor. I hope that helps a little. Best of luck. Rick.

It would matter for 74-76 as points ignition did not have the bolt holes for the powerpack.

If you're willing to mix and match a bit, you can swap stuff around no problem. A '74-'76 powerhead will work fine IF you swap the cylinder head and water jacket cover, in addition to the entire ignition system (including flywheel). I'd keep the '83 carb & recoil, too.
