1983 Johnson 35 prop leaking

I will try to keep this simple. Friend of mine has a 1983 35 horse Johnson that he has not run in several years on the water. He starts it in a bucket every year and winterizes at the end of the season.

The gear case has developed a leak from the prop. He wants the leak fixed. Where to start?

I tried hard not to infer that I know what the problem is. You now know what I know.

OK, I'll go on....

He does have a service manual. I guess what I am trying to find out for him is how big of a job it is to replace the prop shaft seals (Assuming that is the problem). I have a feeling he will end up taking the job to a pro unless it is something that can be done at home without too much trouble of course.
