Default 1982 70 hp Evinrude Carb Problems?

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help that any of the pros on here can give me. My brother just purchased a 16' tri-hull with a 1882 3cyl. 70hp Evinrude. When boat is in the driveway and outboard is in a tank, it seems to run pretty good other than a slightly rough idle and sometimes bogging when trying to rev it. I have done the "link and sync" on it and got the timing right at idle and WOT. When we take it to the lake and put it under a load, it won't get up on a plane and won't rev over about 2000 rpm. If I partially choke the top and bottom carbs with my fingers, it takes right off. I had the bowl off the upper carb, to adjust the float because of lack of fuel, but it didn't have any trash in it. I think all carbs may need a good cleaning and rebuild. These carbs have no low or high speed adjustment to them, which has got me scratching my head. Anybody agree that these are in need of a rebuild? Are these carbs comparable to a 4 cycle carb on a car engine? Pretty much disassemble, clean, and reassemble? Is there anything else I should check before tearing into them? Could a vacuum leak be causing this? Compression is between 115 and 130 on all cylenders. Fuel lines are new and gas tank is clean. Thanks again.....Kevin

Default Re: 1982 70 hp Evinrude Carb Problems?

Well, I rebuilt carbs. Still didn't run quite right in test tank. I started wondering if it could be the power pack. bought an adjustable air gap spark tester. All cylinders would jump a 3/8"+ gap. Noticed some wires going into back of CDI that wouldn't move. Took CDI loose and found that these wires actually went to what I think is a rectifier located lower on the powerhead just under the powerpack. The wires were pinched by the mounting bolt (grounded). Will this make the engine not run properly at high rpm? Also, after seeing that, I wonder if the firing order is correct? Does anybody know the firing order of this engine, and what color wires coming from the powerpack goes to which coil? Please help!!! Thanks....Kevin
