Default 1981 evinrude 115 overheating problem?

Guys I have just ran into a new problem. My 115 evinrude is overheating according to the buzzer. it also appears to be hot by the touch. Problem is the Telltale is peeing cold water and then hot water? I believe the water pump to be okay we have a good steady stream of water but what could possibly be casuing this? Thermostats? any idea's would be greatly appriciated.Oh yea the compression test came up with 120 in all 4 cylinders. Is that exceptable? motor seems to run well. slight miss at idle speed. Thanks

A word of advice.... don't speculate about the condition of the water pump. Drop the lower unit, dismantle the water pump and inspect it thoroughly. After that, if the pump is okay, other areas can be explored.Your compression is fine.

If you are going to take the time to drop the lower unit might as well replace the pump. I would also replace the t-stats and next time you pull the heads replace the deflectors in the water passages.

You've been given the best advice already,so I'll do back-up :Yes start with the water pump. you HAVE to know it's good. Then go for the thermostats. They are probably keeping water from getting out of your engine. If it can't get out it will get hot.DHP

Well, when the overheating buzzer is making noise, and the water from the pee-hole is cold, then I understand your frustation.I have tryid the same on my Evinrude 60 HP.I have installed a temp.gauge (car-instrument), and the temp.switch for this temp.gauge have I installed at my cyl.head, beside the temp.switch for the temp.alarm. (price less than 15$)
