I have a 1981 3 cyl Evinrude. runs great for about 5 mins. and shuts down. I am a Mercury Tech and this is my first OMC. I have replaced all the electronics from the trigger to the stator and the pack and three coils. All ways the same. 5 min and dies. Today I pulled the fltwheel again and I can see where the stator is rubbing the magnets in the flywheel. It seem as it warms up the heat expansion causes to two to meet. Anybody have any ideas ? Other tan that it run beautifully I have noticed if I leave the cowl off it never stalls. I even tried venting the cowl as we do in racing... no change!
Exhaust gasket leaking and choking carbs maybe? Or maybe plug wires etc are arcing to the cowling?
This is a heat related ignition problem. I know the stator should not touch the flywheel . When cover is off it cools enough not to expand and touch. When it does so ,it shorts out ignition and stops.
did you replace the stator with the same part #? if not there may be a slight difference in size which is causing your problem with it touching the magnets.

Yes I did, and have double checked the # with the one I took off and all checks out. I thought the same thing but that doesn't seem to be the case !
I have reserched the flywheel numbers and find that there were many flywheels for this engine. I have three of those numbers and have tried two of them. Taking carful measurements on all three ,I find no difference in any of them, but the part number. Thanks for your question !

Finally got it fixed with another new stator. OEM instead of CDI !!!!
The stator from CDI was bad? Was it covered under warranty?
The CDI stator would get hot and expand and drag (short out) in the flywheel. Didn't want to deal with them any more so I just bought a OMC part. Probably was covered ,but the next one might do the same and I needed to get this fixed.
