1981 35 hp Evinrude overheats.

I have taken this boat out twice in the last two years and each time I got about 50 ft out and it overheated. I replaced the water pump and it blows water out of the telltale hole. I also changed thee thermostat and the ignition coils cause they were melted. I am at my wits end .what to do or check next? HELP!

Droog....Before it overheats, how does it run? Have you done a compression check? What condition is the carb in, maybe it is running lean enough to cause the engine to overheat. Have you taken a look at the cooling passages, possibly when you put new stats in?

It runs really good till it overheats. I got the water cover off now and the passages are clear as far as I can see. I just got another new set of coils and a thermo for it and wonder what else I can possibily check before I use my last new gasket to seal it up again.If I ever see the guy that worked on this thing after I first bought it and fleeced me for $700 for a overhaul I think I may have to knee cap him.
