1979 Evinrude Electric Start Problem

I have a 1979 evinrude that when starting it is very difficult to find the exact point on the shifter when the starter will engage. I am assuming it could maybe be a worn contact? The starter sounds and works fine when it is engaged. Thanks.

Your neutral safety switch is shot. (I had this problem with my '73 and I ended up just bypassing the switch. I of course can't condone this course of action )
