With no strap wrench available in my arsenal, what is the next best meathod of holding the flywheel still with the least chances of causing damaging to the flywheel itself? Thanks..........ALAN

I use a prybar between the ring gear and that hanging bracket behind.
Hey, Have you seen? They make Really Cool life preservers nowadays.
So "Looking Dorky" is no longer an excuse for not wearing one.
Thanks for the advice Willy....... the bad news is, I have no prybar either......... any other options you can think of? Thanks again..........ALAN
Do you simply wedge the prybar between the ring bracket and the flywheel teeth itself?
Flywheel nut removed (I used a tool from my car jack..... next best thing to a prybar huh.....LOL..... Once in hand I understood what you meant).
NEXT QUESTION..........
The only puller I have is one of the straight variety, when I really NEED a puller with 3 legs. Any remedies for effectively removing the flywheel from the crank shaft without damaging the flywheel?
Don't use a puller that acts on the outside of the flywheel, it will damage it!.
What you need is a 3 bolt harmonic puller, there are 3 tapped holes on the top of the flywheel into which you screw the puller bolts.
In an emergency you can remove the flywheel by replacing the flywheel retaining nut untill it is just proud of the end of the crankshaft (to protect the threads), use a suitable leaver to apply upward pressure on the outside edge of the flywheel, then while appling the pressure give the end of the crank a sharp rap with a hammer, you may have to do this a few times before the flywheel comes off its tapper if so rotate the flywheel to a different position after each attempt.
I would however strongly recomend that you use a harmonic puller.

Thats what I was thinking. Well, I'm off to the parts house I suppose. Thanks for all the info. I'm sure I'll have many more questions on this rebuild. It's good to know so many people out there are so willing to help others.......Thanks again!!!!.........................ALAN
I know it's too late, but nothing works better on LOOSENING these nuts than an impact wrench.
Normally don't even have to hold the flywheel.
Doesn't work so well for tightening them though.
