1976 Johnson stinger 75hp, what do i look for in the lower unite..

Last season the power went really south, burnt center piston(miracle it still worked)on my engine.

I'd like to through in some fresh oversize pistons new gasket kit and go.

The problem is the same day the motor stopped, the lower unite was really making weird noises and smelled really bad when i unscrewed that little filler screw.

I want to check what's wrong with lower unite and see if it's ready for another season?
Is there a way to do this without taking it apart?
Can you still get gear parts for lower unite?
Am i wasting my time rebuilding this thing?
When do you draw the line and just cut your losses?
